Overview of "When Pain Becomes Suffering" A Presentation
by Penny Simkin
Labor pain is a major concern of pregnant women, their partners
and their caregivers, and is second only to the well-being of
mother and baby. Yet, many women are able to manage or cope with
their pain, and take great satisfaction from their childbirths.
If pain becomes suffering, however, women feel disappointed,
inadequate, or even traumatized by the birth experience. These
feelings sometimes continue for a long time after birth and can
even lead to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
No woman should suffer in labor.
This talk will cover:
1) A discussion of pain in labor
2) The differences between pain,
suffering, and trauma in labor
3) How to assess a woman's coping
during labor
4) Ways to prevent suffering, including
the "code word" and intensive labor support techniques
5) the contribution of prior unresolved
trauma to PTSD after childbirth
6) Why women with epidurals may
still suffer in labor
7) How to help a woman process
a traumatic birth
8) The elements of Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder and how it is different from Postpartum Depression
or other mood disorders
9) Childbirth preparation for the
woman whose previous birth was traumatic.
This presentation is geared to doulas, childbirth educators,
nurses, midwives, or doctors, and may also be helpful to psychotherapists
who serve women of childbearing-age.
